Boys and Girls Club Middle School “Public Service Announcement” Program:
Since 2002, through the PSA program we have actively sought out opportunities to address gaps in our education system, with a special focus on using the creative medium of film to deepen relationships and understanding of the world. The Boys & Girls Club of Sonoma Valley is the setting for an outstanding middle school video program. Talented volunteer instructors, including SVHS Media Arts program alumni, offer free video workshops for middle school students in the Intel Lab. The three-day workshops guide students to produce their own live action video and/or puppeteer Public Service Announcement. As a result of their success, we will add two more weekend programs in 2013 (summer and fall) and introduce more students to this program. These projects serve as a pipeline to the high school program. Last year and again this year we will screen some of these videos at the festival in April.
We are committed to helping children find productive outlets that encourage teamwork, promote academic excellence and unleash creative expression. SIFF administrates the funding and staffing for free video workshops for middle school students. Held at the Boys and Girls Club, the three-day workshop guides students through the process of making Public Service Announcements using live action and/or puppeteer platforms. Students research and identify a social issue, then produce a short PSA to be screened at the annual film festival in April. Subjects include bullying, environmental awareness, global issues, and violence. The subjects are chosen with the knowledge that these students are often most vulnerable to poverty, violence and health issues. This program prepares students for the high school media arts program while teaching academic research and thesis based messaging. Additionally, the PSA program is specifically offered to students who otherwise have extremely limited access to arts education.
