Celebrating the contributions, values and culture of our vibrant Latino community, SIFF proudly presents VAMOS AL CINE,  special “cocktail of Latino cinema” with flavors from Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. Films screenings at La Luz Center and at venues around the Plaza. Sponsored by the Fred and June MacMurray Foundation.

AMOR CRONICO /Chronic Love | Cuba

The flamboyant Grammy nominated Cuban-born and New York based singer CuCu Diamantes on her tour around Cuba. Footage of live musical performances with a fictional love story narrative, result in an energetic display of CuCu’s glamorous performance style with a fresh Latin soundtrack and comical twist. A unique road movie and portrait of a Cuban artist traveling back to her roots.  Director Jorge Perrugoria attending.

Esta exuberante mezcla de realidad y ficción acompaña a la inigualable cantante cubano/neoyorquina y nominada al Grammy CuCu Diamantes durante su primera gira por Cuba. Escenas reales de sus presentaciones tipo cabaret se entretejen con una historia de amor ficticia. Una carta de amor al cine cubano, su música y su gente. Foro con el director JORGE PERUGORRIA

Black-humor comedy speaks of life using death as an excuse. A young lab worker decides to have her financial woes and hardships worked out by selling the tomb where her parents lie and, “piece-by-piece” their remains. It’s all about surviving and sacrificing the dead to feed the living! Director Jorge Perrugoria attending.

Comedia de humor negro que habla de la vida usando la muerte como excusa. Una joven trabajadora de un laboratorio decide acabar con sus penurias de dinero vendiendo la tumba donde descansas sus padres y, “pedazo-a-pedazo” sus restos. ¡Se trata de sobrevivir y sacrificar a los muertos para alimentar a los vivos! MELAZA / Molasses | Cuba

With the closure of the sugar mill, the little town of Molasses is devastated, lifeless. Aldo and Monica form a young married couple with creative ways to survive. By supporting each other, they try to save their world without losing their faith. Director Carlos Lechuga will be attending.

Con el cierre del trapiche local, el pintoresco pueblo cubano de Melaza se ha vuelto desolado y sin vida. El maestro de escuela Aldo y la ahora desempleada Monica se las ingenian para apenas subsistir, yendo tan lejos hasta alquilar su casa como el prostíbulo local para obtener algo de dinero. Cuando se meten en problemas con las autoridades, las multas los llevan a tomar medidas más desesperadas.  Foro con el director Carlos Lechuga

VIVA CUBA | Cuba.  

In a tale akin to “Romeo and Juliet,” the friendship between two children is threatened by their parents’ differences. Malú is from an upper-class family and her single mother does not want her to play with Jorgito, as she thinks his background coarse and commonplace. Jorgito’s mother, a poor socialist proud of her family’s social standing, places similar restrictions on her son.. When the children learn that Malú’s mother is planning to leave Cuba, they decide to travel to the other side of the island to find Malú’s father and persuade him against signing the forms that would allow it.  Director Juan Carlos Cremata attending.

Similar a “Romeo y Julieta”, la amistad entre dos niños es amenazada por las diferencias entre sus padres. Malú es de familia de clase alta y su madre soltera no quiere que juegue con Jorgito de clase más baja. Malú quiere evitar que su madre se la lleve de Cuba, y Jorgito la acompaña en un viaje al otro lado de la isla para que ella convenza a su padre que de no firme los documentos que permitan su viaje. Alex Ramirez the man who is destined to be the best baseball player that ever lived will do anything to fulfill that dream. The unexpected events he encounters and the way he chooses to handle them just to play his beloved sport, land him in a bit of trouble.

Un hombre destinado a ser el mejor jugador de baseball que jamás hubo hará lo que sea para alcanzar su sueño. Los inesperados eventos que enfrenta, y la forma como escoge resolverlos para poder batir su amada pelota, lo llevan a tener más de un problema.

JARDIN DE AMAPOLAS /Field of Amapolas | Colombia

In Colombia cultivating poppies (Amapolas) is a dangerous, but lucrative business. A farmer and his son are exiled from their village at the high planes. They boy befriends a girl to borrows a little dog to play with, while the father is forced to work in the illegal Amapola (poppy) filed. The two stories intertwine when one day the boy follows his father to work. 

En Colombia cultivar amapolas es un negocio peligroso pero lucrativo. Un campesino y su hijo son expulsados de su pueblo en las montañas. El niño hace amistad con una niña quien pide prestado un perrito para jugar, mientras que el padre es forzado a trabajar en el campo ilegal de amapolas. Las dos historias se unen cuando un día el niño sigue a su papá a su trabajo.

AZUL Y NO TAN ROSA./ My Straight Son | Venezuela 

Winner of the Goya Award, best feature. A young and successful photographer lives in the glamorous world of fashion, shallowness and excess. A tragic accident turns his world around; his partner is now in a coma. Unexpectedly, and right at this terrible time, he must take care of his so. Now, both of them have to adapt to each other; the son to the unknown, homosexual world of his father, and the gay father to the closed attitude of his teenage son. Diego, un joven y exitoso fotógrafo vive en el glamoroso mundo de la moda, lo superficial y el exceso y de repente su mundo se trastorna por un trágico accidente: su pareja está en coma. En ese mismo terrible momento, Diego debe cuidar de su hijo Armando. CICLO | Mexico 

Pachuca, 1956. Brothers Arturo and Gustavo Martinez leave their hometown in central Mexico with the desire to cross the continent on bicycles. Eighty-two days and 5,600 km later, they arrive in Toronto, not knowing that this journey will change the entire route of their lives. Over half a century later, Arturo and Gustavo - now in their 70s - retrace that epic path, in an exploration of memory, the cycles of life and the unavoidable passage of time.

Pachuca, 1956. Los hermanos Arturo y Gustavo Martínez dejan su ciudad en el centro de México con el deseo de cruzar el continente en bicicleta. Ochenta y dos días y 5.600 km más tarde, llegan a Toronto, sin saber que este viaje cambiara toda la ruta de sus vidas. Más de medio siglo después, Arturo y Gustavo – ahora en los 70s – recorren de nuevo su épica ruta, explorando los recuerdos, los ciclos de la vida y el paso inevitable del tiempo. Dir. LOS RETRATOS/ Portraits | Colombia


It’s Sunday, the day to shoo at the local market and Grandma Paulina wants to prepare creole hen to her husband, but the money is not enough. Without wishing it, she wins a Polaroid camera in a raffle, so, she proposes her husband to take pictures of their lives in the country. But the camera roll ends up and the hunger persists!

En el mercado de domingo la abuela Paulina sin querer se gana una cámara Polaroid en una rifa. Le propone a su esposo tomar fotos de sus vidas en el campo. Pero cuando el rollo de la cámara se termina, ¡el hambre persiste!
